Christmas Message

by Charles Welch

An “audio letter” from the early 1960’s, originally sent from Charles Welch of the Berean Forward Movement in London, to friends in the USA.

After some initial greetings, the speaker presents an excellent 15 minute Bible study message focussing on the coming of the Lord Jesus into the world 2000 years ago, and the role He would play as Kinsman-Redeemer. The Bible readings referred to in the recording are listed below, or may be downloaded as a PDF.

Bible readings from Charles Welch’s recorded Christmas Message to friends overseas (c. early 1960’s)

Galatians 4:4,5 – But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Genesis 3:15 – I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; [He] shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Hebrews 10:4-7 – For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Philippians 2:8 – And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

1 Timothy 3:16 – And without controversy great [YLT= ‘confessedly great’] is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

John 1:1-3,14 – In the beginning was the Word … All things were made by him … And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt [in a tent] among us …

Hebrews 1:10-12 – And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest …

Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.

Luke 2:13,14 – And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’

Anticipations of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament, carried over into the New Testament

Isaiah 9:6 – For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 7:14 – Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:21-23 – And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, ‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.’

Isaiah 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy [kinsman] redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things ; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

Job 19:25  – For I know that my [kinsman] redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

[The Book of Ruth – the role of the kinsman-redeemer.]

Job 9:32,33 – For he [God] is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.   [KJV= daysman; NKJV= mediator; NIV 1984= someone to arbitrate; NIV 2011= someone to mediate]

Philippians 2:5-8 – Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery [RV margin = ‘a thing to be grasped at’] to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation [RV= ‘emptied Himself’], and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

1 Corinthians 15:21,45 – For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead …  so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made  a quickening spirit.

1 Timothy 2:1-7 – I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; [RV= ‘himself, man, Christ Jesus’] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
