    Greetings in Christ from Texas,

    In the Things That Are Hard To Understand series, Michael Penny argues against circumcision for Judeans however please explain when did God abrogated His eternal Abrahamic Covenant? I think it needs to be clear: All Judeans must be circumcised, whereas Gentiles not at all. Cheers, James Forrestal El Paso, Texas

      Hello James. Thanks for your comment. Michael Penny was asked to respond, and here’s what he had to say:

      —–

      From Abraham’s time, throughout the rest of the Old Testament, through the Gospel Period and through the Acts Period God’s desire was for the people of Israel to be circumcised.
      However, at the end of the Acts Period , because of Israel’s hardness of heart, they became blind and deaf and God’s salvation was sent to the Gentiles (Acts 28:25-28).
      In the letters written after that time – Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon) – we see some significant changes, especially for Christians Jews.
      For example:
      1) The Law, with its commandments and ordinances, was abolished (Ephesians 2:14-15) – and that would include circumcision;
      2) The Law, the written code and its regulations, were taken away (Colossians 2:14-16) – and that would include circumcision, as an earlier verse makes clear;
      3) Physical circumcision of flesh done by men was replaced with spiritual circumcision of the sinful nature performed by Christ (Colossians 2:11);
      4) Those who continued to insist on physical circumcision were called ‘mutilators of the flesh’ and Paul wrote “It is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh” (Philippians 3:2-3).
      5) And later Paul criticises those who continued to insist on circumcision (Titus 1:10-11).

      With respect to the Abrahamic Covenant, is it called ‘eternal’ in the Bible?
      And the Hebrew translated ‘eternal’ literally means ‘age long’.

      The last part of the Abrahamic covenant is that ‘all peoples of the earth will be blessed through you’ (Genesis 12:3); i.e. through the descendants of Abraham.
      And as we progress through the Bible we see that the only way to God was through the people of Israel.
      And we see many examples of this in the Old Testament – either nationally (Jonah going to Nineveh) or individually (Gentiles needed to keep the Sabbath and be circumcised; Isaiah 56:4-7).
      This is also true during the Acts Period, for all the leaders, evangelists, teachers, preachers, who took the gospel to the Gentiles were Jews.
      However, again, after the judgment upon Israel recorded in Acts 28:25-28, things changed.
      We see the Gentile Titus put in charge of Crete and Paul had fewer Jewish helpers (Colossians 4:10-11).
      And coming to today … the vast amount of preaching and teaching is done by Gentiles, and I was saved through the ministry of a Gentile.
      Thus today, generally speaking, Gentiles are being blessed through Christian Gentiles.

    The phrase “baptized for the dead”? I think Paul meant this in reference to the Lord Jesus if He had not been resurrected. (comment is in reference to the audio: “How not to study the Bible” part one)

    • bbfaadmin says:

      Hello James. I agree with your take on the phrase “baptized for the dead” in 1 Corinthians 15:29,30.
      – David.
